Finding Nemo: Ethan’s 2nd Birthday Bash Invitations Make a BIG SPLASH! May 24, 2013

I typically start planning for any party we throw at least 3 months in advance.  There are menu’s to plan, decorations to consider and so much more.  Then Ethan was born and it wasn’t until15 days later we got to bring him home from his arduous stay in the NICU.  That was when I started planning his 1st birthday party because boy oh boy did we have something to celebrate!!!

That was my record – planning a party 10 1/2 months in advance – until now that is…  Granted I’ve truly only been planning Ethan’s Nemo party now for 5 months but my new record is that I’m also already planning his 3rd (Toy Story) and 4th (Cars) birthday parties as well!  I just can’t help it.  It is so exciting to see his eyes light up over the smallest things and it brings me great joy to make his eye’s light up and to fill his world with wonder.

I’ve spent months turning his bedroom and bathroom into a private tropical paradise for our little guy so I just had to pull out all the stops for his invitations too.  Check my splashy invites out – they’ll be swimming to a doorstep near you very soon!

To make these invitation you’ll need to start by making your husband drink lots of Starbuck Fraps – the bottles are perfect for so many wonderful crafts!

Add one charming little clown fish AKA Nemo.  I floated Nemo on a clothespin knowing I’d need something tall that would be fairly simple to maneuver through the top of the small glass bottle with just the tips of my fingers.  I covered the clothespin with cardstock using Power Crafty double sided tape.  Using the “flip” feature I was able to print a reverse image of Nemo so that no matter which side of the jar you look in you see him.  I also pinched a small 1 x 2 strip of contact paper in the clasp of the clothespin sticky side down so that the clothes pin would stand somewhat straight and centered in the jar until I was able to fill it with the goodies that would really stabilize it.  For the sandy ocean floor I added Nabisco Honey Maid Graham Cracker crumbs.

Next add water via M&M’s custom color candies that can be purchased online or in your favorite specialty candy shop like Fuzzywigs.

Don’t forget to add a few fishy friends so Nemo won’t be lonely in his new home!  These tasty Goldfish crackers are a staple in our home!

I created a tag that could then hang over two sides of the jar – the sticky sides from where the labels came off.  The front side says:

“It’s o-FISH-al, Ethan’s turning 2…

Join us for a WHALE of a good time in the Big Ol’ Blue!”

I just love this whale stamp from Stampin’ Up!  However, I added Marlin and Dori with black pen and highlighters being freed from the whale much as they were in the movie.  Notice also how the orange cardstock resembles a fish tail coming out from behind the white stamped cardstock.  I made sure the white mat crossed the orange just as a stripe would on a clown fish 🙂

The back of the jar features some of the hit lines and characters from the movie…

I also wanted to add an interactive feature so if you notice the orange “fishy tail” sticking out from under the lid you’ll be included to hold it while removing the lid.  There you’ll discover photos we took of Ethan in his room after we filled with two shades of blue balloons and one orange one.  “Find Nemo” we said and he had so much fun!  His photo’s accordian out of the small lid adhered with double sided tape to about 12″ of the sheer orange ribbon anchored by his custom made Nemo stickers.  Stickers and Nemo address stamp are all thanks to one of my favorite websites www.expressionery.com.  The top of the lid is covered by the custom nemo address stamp on orange cardstock with a little bit of blue ribbon wrapped around the side.

I hope you enjoy this idea as much as I have enjoyed creating these!  Now I’m off to finalize the menu, games, prizes and favors!

Our Birthday Bloomsday Weekend Fun May 7, 2012

Our weekend started a gift from Ethan that he created with Linda, his teacher!  It is just darling and we will treasure it always!  It was a wonderful surprise to come home to after my volunteer shift at the Bloomsday tradeshow!

Our weekend continues with the arrival of Grandpa, Auntie Rachie & boyfriend Jayson and Cousin Riley who are all in town for Bloomsday.  We carbed up on Spaghetti and garlice bread and settled in to a good nights sleep!

Saturday morning we all ventured out to watch Ethan’s final swimming lesson with Daddy.

He did so great but daddy did say that Ethan was a little more skiddish about the water slide finale this time around.   His still came down smiling and doing great though!  We were even able to get video that I’ll try to share soon!

Our little “Shrimp/Kipper” has graduated his second series of swim classes!  Michael Phelps, watch out!

Every year David and I celebrate our holiday birthdays (May Day & Cinco de Mayo) by having a great meal with friends and family.  This year  – the big 35 is upon us and we decided that with Ethan’s birthday bash just around the corner we’d better do a much smaller gathering so that I still have energy left for all our new parenting activities.  So we fired up the grill and served ribs with salads and all the fixings!  My ribs are not given justice by this photo but they are pretty tasty!  My own spice rub blend and bbq sauce make for good eats and future summer time grilling blog post.  Stay tuned…

I threw in some new recipes that sounded very “pinteresting!”  Check out theloadedbowlrecipe and cornandblueberrysalad  – YUM!   Three cakes finished off the meal: My Banana Cake, Blueberry Cheesecake (just because it sounded good) and this year for David – Strawberry Cake with Lemonade Cream Cheese Frosting which put us all in a food coma for sure!  More on these great summer recipes to come!

I love when we can all get together and just visit, laugh and now watch all our little kiddos skamper about!

It amazes me how quickly the children grow!

Even the newest member to our group – Noah 🙂

So we are carbed up, rested and ready to race!

Bloomsday 2012 – HERE WE COME!

My goal: 1hr 20 min – Actual: 1hr 23 min – ugh!

But I finished 🙂

Everyone did a great job and congrats to Rachie and Jayson on their first of many Bloomsday victories!  Off to the corporate cup tent I went for good eats and massage – then after picking Ethan up from Grandma’s we headed home to hit the hot tub!  Which is exactly where we found grandpa and company already relaxing in the sun!

The perfect way to finish celebrating Bloomsday is this – amazing waffles hot off the greatest birthday gift ever!  My father completely refurbished this industrial waffle iron for me and it is the coolest thing I’ve seen!  It pumps out waffles like you wouldn’t believe and boy they were tasty!  Thanks Dad!!!

As the saying goes, all good things must come to an end… and Grandpa has to say goodbye for about 4 weeks until Ethan’s first birthday.  Oh what seriously silly fun I have in store for us the week of my angels special day.  I thank God for my family, friends and all those who add joy and light to our lives!  You are all loved!

“God be with you ’til we meet again…”

Yes, I’m a proud momma!  Our little guy did so wonderful in this four week series.  We sang, splashed, danced, bounced, tried to learn blowing bubbles (while not drinking the pool-that will take some time still) and we even rocked that water slide too!

I grew up afraid of the water, not 100% sure why but I attribute it to my childhood obsession with sharks.  Yes, I am a child of the JAWS era-LOL!  I actaully am more afraid of the heights than the water.  When floating on the surface it’s a long ways to the bottom… and in the lake – you can’t even see the bottom!  I too take private swim lessons and am proud to report that I can now swim under water and jump in the without holding my nose!  It’s a miracle!  These lessons are step one in preparation for a triathalon that I intend to rock within the next two years!  The running is no problem, the biking I’ll figure out (another thing I don’t love cause I’m elevated from the ground-haha) but the swimming I will continue to master thanks to a great swim coach!
